Clean Air Day 2025 – Why Indoor Air Quality Deserves Equal Attention

Clean Air Day 2025
As we mark Clean Air Day - the UK's largest campaign dedicated to raising awareness of air pollution - on 19th June this year, it’s time to expand the conversation beyond outdoor emissions. At Nuaire, we believe that clean air doesn’t stop at the front door — and for those of us shaping the built environment, the responsibility to deliver healthy, breathable indoor spaces is more critical than ever.
Indoor Air Quality: The Invisible Challenge
For specifiers, consultants, and designers in the HVAC and construction sectors, indoor air quality (IAQ) must be a core consideration. With people in the UK spending approximately 90% of their time indoors — in homes, workplaces, schools, and healthcare settings — the air inside buildings directly impacts health, productivity, and wellbeing.
Yet, indoor air is often overlooked. Common pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon dioxide (CO₂), particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), and excess humidity can all compromise IAQ, even in modern, energy-efficient buildings. Without adequate ventilation strategies, these pollutants accumulate, undermining the quality of the internal environment and, ultimately, the performance and safety of the building.
Bridging the Gap Between Design and Performance
As a leading manufacturer of ventilation systems, Nuaire works closely with specifiers to ensure IAQ is built into the design, not retrofitted as an afterthought. Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR), demand-controlled ventilation, and hybrid systems all play a role in maintaining fresh, filtered airflow, tailored to occupancy and usage patterns.
We also encourage a performance-led approach — specifying systems that meet Part F and Part L Building Regulations is a legal requirement, but real-world performance must go further. Incorporating sensors, commissioning verification, and ongoing maintenance ensures IAQ strategies remain effective long after handover.
Clean Air is a Shared Responsibility
Clean Air Day reminds us that air pollution is not just a transport or government problem — it’s a challenge for everyone in the built environment. Developers, architects, M&E consultants, and contractors all have a part to play in improving IAQ outcomes.
At Nuaire, we’re proud to support Clean Air Day by continuing to innovate in energy-efficient ventilation solutions that deliver measurable improvements in air quality.
Looking Ahead
The path to cleaner air doesn’t end with awareness — it begins with action. We urge all specifiers and stakeholders to consider indoor air quality with the same rigour as outdoor pollution mitigation. With the right ventilation strategy, clean, safe air can be an integral part of every building we design, build, and occupy.
This Clean Air Day, let’s remember: healthy buildings start with healthy air.
