Two new, twin-bay aircraft hangars located at Teesside Airport Business Park, designed to accommodate large commercial aircraft, required a sophisticated ventilation solution to ensure a safe and comfortable working environment. Supporting Eurovent HVAC Solutions and Parsec Consulting Engineers, Nuaire has provided advanced Air Handling Units (AHUs) that deliver exceptional air quality, energy efficiency, and compliance with stringent industry standards.

The Challenge

Suitable ventilation is required for the comfort of the staff that will be working within the hangers and be designed in a manner to work alongside the other building heating/cooling systems to provide the most effective and efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning building system. Designing a mechanical ventilation system for such buildings must comply with a number of standards, from Building Regulations Approved Document F for non-dwellings, Document L for Conservation of fuel and power, health and safety regulations such as the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations, and specific aviation industry standards.

The contractor awarded this project, Eurovent, has been delivering bespoke HVAC solutions across a wide range of industries since 2006, including Hangar 2 at Teesside Airport Business Park. Nuaire has worked with Eurovent previously on process manufacturing projects, water treatment plants and universities, and has a long history with the business owners in their previous roles as consultant design engineers.

Working very much as a collaborative team, Nuaire’s expertise in ventilation solutions was welcomed, and Nuaire was given the opportunity to support the project design team with the AHU selections for the two new hangars with Parsec Consulting Engineers.

The Solution

As specified, two Nuaire Boxer Packaged Solutions (BPS) Air Handling Units (AHU) have been installed in the two new hangars on the mezzanine deck to provide highly effective ventilation.

BPS has been designed, engineered and tested to provide the most efficient, best performing, most compact and easiest to select AHU on the market. The BPS units on this project were selected with high efficiency vertical plate crossover heat exchangers. M5 filters in the extract section capture medium sized particles, and a combination of G4 pre-filter and F7 bag filter within the supply air stream prevent fine particulate matter (PM) and allergens from entering the systems and building.

BPS can be supplied in many configurations to suit the project or application. For the two new hangars at Teesside Airport Business Park the AHUs have been fitted with reverse cycle DX coils with matching condensers, to provide both heating and cooling. Ecosmart (Connect) controls provide an energy-efficient demand control ventilation solution for the AHUs via BACnet connectivity.

The latest BPS AHUs have a further feature that is becoming all the more important to specifiers as we strive to reach net zero: it is manufactured from XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel, for a product with lower embodied carbon.  Nuaire is the first UK ventilation manufacturer to switch to this innovative steel.

In addition to assisting with system design and supplying product, Nuaire is pleased to have provided its Health Check service, which ensures the AHUs are working as they should prior to commissioning.  This service, which is available on all Nuaire air handling and packaged heat recovery units, sees Nuaire engineers attend site to check all key areas for issues, from assembly and wiring, to controls and warranty observations.  For Eurovent Director Richard Watson, the service “gives confidence that the unit is working as planned.”

The Outcome

Meeting Parsec’s specification for this project, which included high efficiency performance (they are ErP 2018 compliant) and low energy consumption, the BPS AHUs were also chosen based on their quality - they have industry leading product build classifications - and reliability.  This decision is reinforced by Richard Watson who states “They were named in the specification by the Consultant but we would use Nuaire anyway as we like the quality of the units.”
