Getting to know you Victoria

Welcome to the first of our monthly 'Getting To Know You' features, celebrating the diversity and wide range of skills and expertise within Nuaire.

This month Victoria Selway, Manufacturing Engineer faces our tricky Quizmaster...

What do you do at Nuaire and in what circumstances would someone come to you for something?

At Nuaire I am a Manufacturing Engineer. Part of a Manufacturing Engineer’s role is to look at any improvements we can make to the manufacturing cells referred to as continuous improvement. You would come to me if you had any suggestions that could improve the tasks completed as part of your job. I would investigate the suggestions and provide some solutions to how we could implement them.

Who has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?

My parents and grandparents have always been my most important influencers at work and have always supported me throughout my career.

How do you start your day?

Always with a cup of tea

What led you to this career?

My family have also influenced my drive to become an engineer, as I have always taken an interest in their manufacturing-related jobs. I always used to assist my grandad when younger fixing and repairing things around the home which led to me studying electronics and then engineering.

Can you tell us about a work-related accomplishment that you're really proud of?

Being a finalist for the NMI Young Engineer of the Year was unexpected but the nomination was because of improvement projects that had been completed that in total saved the company £250k.

What is the biggest misconception people have about your position?

That we are magicians – sometimes people forget that we don’t have a magic wand so things take time to improve.

Who inspires you?

The answer to this question changes depending on where we are in life. If asked while at school then some of my teachers would be the answer but currently I am inspired by individuals who manage to achieve a successful work/life balance. Again my family has played a large role in inspiring me but also celebrities such as Darcey Bussel who manage to maintain a career and business while ensuring time is still left aside for home life.

If you could swap places with someone in Nuaire, who would it be?

I would enjoy being in the canteen as I enjoy cooking and find it relaxing – however, cooking en masse would likely be a lot less relaxing...

What’s the most challenging thing you have worked on since starting your role?

This is difficult to answer as each project has its own challenges. I’ve learnt that each project will always come with its challenges, sometimes unexpected, but it’s how we persevere to overcome these that can define the level of success of the project.
