ErP Directive

ErP stands for Energy Related Products and is an EU directive for the eco design of Energy Related Products.

The aim of the directive is to provide consistent EU-wide rules for improving the environmental performance of products by setting minimum efficiency standards.

All fan types are affected that have an electrical power input between 125W and 500kw.

The directive will be mandatory for all 27 EU countries and upon implementation of the directive, fans that do not comply with the efficiency guidelines will no longer be able to be sold or imported into those countries.

It is important to note that fans between 125W and 500kW that are integrated and used as a component of another finished product are also subject to the provisions of the regulation.

There are two stages to the implementation of the directive.  The first stage of the implementation took place from the 1st of January 2013 and resulted in all fans sold for use within the EU requiring a calculated ERP rating, that is equal to or higher than a set minimum energy efficiency.

The second phase came into effect from the 1st of January 2015 and energy efficiency values have changed to a much higher level.

The minimum energy efficiency requirements for fans can be found in Tables 1 and Tables 2 of the official regulations.

Exclusions from the requirement include:

  • All fans with an electrical power input less than 125W
  • All Atex fans
  • All high temperature fans for emergency use only
  • All 230◦C Bifurcated Axial fans (or any fan for gas temperature >100◦C)
  • All Axial fans for use at -40◦C
  • All Axial flow fans for toxic, corrosive, flammable or abrasive gas flow

As of 1st of January 2015, fans are required to comply with the ErP Directive’s requirements.

The onus is on the fan manufacturer to ensure they do not supply non-compliant fans; however, information will be supplied on both the manufactures website and technical documentation. Products will also be labelled in such a way you can determine whether they are ErP2015 complaint.
